MYRTLE BEACH, S.C. - The Methodist softball team traveled to Myrtle Beach, S.C. on Wednesday to take on the undefeated Bridgewater Eagles in a doubleheader. Bridgewater swept the Monarchs 8-0 and 6-1 to move to 8-0 on the year.

The Monarchs got out of a jam in the bottom of the first in game one and got their first hit of the day from Jody Eyler in the second, but it was the Eagles who scored first with two runs on three hits in the bottom of the third inning. Bridgewater came back and scored six runs in the fourth on five hits and three walks to lead 8-0. Darci Martin and Maggie Gaines tried to rally in the top of the fifth with singles, but Methodist came up empty as the Eagles took the win.

Cortney Kerns picked up the Monarchs only other hit of the day. Alex Bass pitched the first three innings to take the loss while Jennie Price finished in relief.

The Eagles picked up where they left off with a three-run homerun in the top of the first inning of game two to jump out to the early lead. They added an unearned run in the third to lead 4-0. Methodist had runners on first and second twice in the fourth but still could not get a run across. Martin prevented the shutout with a solo homerun in the fifth, but Bridgewater added two runs in the seventh to win 6-1.

Martin finished 2-for-3 in game two while Kerns, Caline Daun, and Crystal Metzger each added a hit for the Monarchs. Emily Beck went six innings for the Monarchs scattering 10 hits with two strikeouts. Jessica Pridgen entered in the seventh to close for Methodist.

The Monarchs will open USA South play on Tuesday when they host Greensboro College at 2 pm.
