FAYETTEVILLE, N.C. – Methodist split with USA South rival Greensboro on Tuesday afternoon with a 3-0 loss and 2-1 win over the Pride.
The Monarchs had a scoring opportunity in the bottom of the third when
Cortney Kerns singled to shortstop and stole second base.
Jody Eyler singled to center, but Kerns was called out on a close play at the plate.
Greensboro put together four hits in the fifth to take the 3-0 lead and Methodist struggled to battle back.
Kayla Talbert started a rally in the bottom of the seventh with a lead off single through the right side. Talbert moved to second on a ground out and
Caline Daun hit a two out single to move to Talbert to third.
Kristina Wolfrom loaded the bases with a base hit, but the Pride recorded the final out to win 3-0.
Meredith Harris pitched the complete game shutout for Greensboro while
Alex Bass took the loss in five innings with three strikeouts.
Emily Beck finished the final two innings.
Game two went scoreless through the first four and a half innings before
Jessica Pridgen singled to right center in the bottom of the fifth. She moved to second on
Maggie Gaines sacrifice bunt and
Ambrosia Fenwick came in to pinch run. Fenwick stole third and scored on Kerns' double to left. Greensboro came back and scored a run on back to back doubles in the top of the sixth, but Methodist rallied in the bottom of the inning. Eyler led off with a walk and
Jennie Price came on to pinch run.
Sara Poling laid down the sacrifice and Price moved to third on a passed ball. Talbert singled to right for Price to score the game-winning run.
Pridgen picked up the win in the circle with the complete game scattering four hits with one strikeout. Olivia McPherson took the loss in four and two thirds innings pitched for the Pride.
Kerns led the Monarchs at the plate hitting 4-for-7 in two games with a RBI.
Methodist will travel to Averett on Saturday for a doubleheader at 1:30 pm.
