DANVILLE, Va. - Averett came from behind to win game one 3-2 over the Methodist softball team and then held the Monarchs to just three hits in game two to win 2-0.
In game one, Methodist scored first when
Alex Bass led off the third inning with a double to right field.
Ambrosia Fenwick entered as a pinch runner and scored on
Brittany Melton's single down the right field line.
Sara Poling led off the fourth with a single to center and
Jennie Price came on to pinch run. Price moved to second on
Kayla Talbert's single and advanced to third on
Darci Martin's sacrifice bunt. Price scored on an error for the Monarchs to lead 2-0. The Cougars cut into the lead with a run in the bottom of the fifth but rallied with two walks and a defensive error to win 3-2.
Bass and Poling both hit 2-for-3 in the game. Bass pitched the complete game giving up eight hits with eight strikeouts.
Averett's pitcher Sandra Dennison really shut down the Monarchs in game two holding them to just three hits.
Caline Daun had the first hit for Methodist with a single down the right field line in the fourth inning but could not advance. Averett strung together two hits and capitalized on a defensive error to score two runs in the bottom of the fifth. The Monarchs tried to come back in the seventh when Daun and Talbert both had singles, but Averett finished up with the 2-0 win.
Jessica Pridgen started in the circle for Methodist pitching five innings allowing just three hits and striking out three.
Emily Beck finished off the final inning in relief.
The Monarchs will host Meredith on Wednesday in a USA South doubleheader at 2 pm.
