FAYETTEVILLE, N.C. - The Methodist softball team battled with Meredith College Wednesday afternoon finishing up with a split. The Monarchs won the first game 2-0 before falling 4-0 in the second.

After Cortney Kerns led off for the Monarchs with a walk she advanced to third on a stolen base and wild pitch but could not score. The Avenging Angels loaded the bases in the second, but Methodist pitcher Jessica Pridgens got out of the jam with a fly ball to centerfield. Meredith loaded the bases again in the fourth but another flyout and a strikeout left the two teams scoreless going into the bottom of the fourth.

Crystal Metzger drew a lead-off walk and moved to second on Sara Poling's sacrifice bunt. Metzger was able to score on Darci Martin's double down the left field line for the first hit and the first run for the Monarchs. Alex Bass followed up with a single to left center for Martin to give Methodist the 2-0 lead.  Meredith came back and left another three runners stranded in the fifth before scoring an unearned run in the seventh but Maggie Gaines caught a fly ball in shallow center to record the final out and preserve the win.

Pridgen finished with the win to move to 3-2 on the season while Emily Beck earned the save in the final two innings of relief.

Meredith (10-8, 5-1) took the early 2-0 lead in the second inning of game two when they put together three hits. They added two runs in the fourth after a lead-off walk and home run to left center to hold the 4-0 advantage. Methodist left seven runners stranded during the game loading the bases in the bottom of the second, but could not cut into the Angels' lead.

Arielle Stout picked up the win for Meredith while Bass took the loss for the Monarchs. Jennie Price finished in the circle for Methodist pitching four innings allowing just two hits. Methodist finished with five hits from five different players.

The Monarchs are scheduled to travel to Virginia Wesleyan on Thursday for a doubleheader at 2:30 pm.
