Softball Falls to Captains

Cortney Kerns hit 3-for-3 in game one

FAYETTEVILLE, N.C. - The Monarchs took on eighth ranked Christopher Newport softball Friday afternoon and fell 6-1 and 6-0 to finish out USA South conference play.

In game one, the two teams played three scoreless innings beofre the Captains got on the board in the fourth with a two-RBI double to left center. Another RBI single and Christopher Newport led 3-0. Crystal Metzger led off the bottom of the sixth with a walk and moved to second on Kayla Talbert's single to right field. Metzger advanced to third on a deep fly ball and scored on Sara Poling's sacrifice fly to move the Monarchs within two.

The Captains came back and scored three more runs in the seventh to go up 6-1. Methodist loaded the bases in the bottom of the seventh, but Christopher Newport held off the Monarchs for the win.

Cortney Kerns hit 3-for-3 on the day. Emily Beck pitched the complete game to take the loss. Kristen Rowe went a full seven innings with six strikeouts for the win.

Neither team scored in the first inning of game one, but the Captains took the early lead with a run on three hits in the second inning. A sacrifice fly gave Christopher Newport the 2-0 lead before Jessie Atkinson hit a home run for the Captains in the fifth. Four hits and a Monarch error gave them three runs in the seventh to finish with the 6-0 win.

Methodist finished with three hits from Jody Eyler, Talbert and Poling. Jennie Price pitched for the Monarchs to take the loss while Lindsay Kelly earned the win for the Captains.

The Monarchs will travel to Virginia Wesleyan on Monday for a rescheduled game.
