NEWPORT NEWS, Va. - Christopher Newport jumped out to the early lead and used a big seventh inning to prevail 12-2 over the Methodist baseball team.
Christopher Newport hit back-to-back home runs in the bottom of the first inning. The Monarchs got on the board with a run in the fourth after
Brian Inghram led off with a single.
Brad Davis sacrificed him to second and Inghram scored on
Dustin Proctor's double. The Captains extended their lead to 5-1 in the fifth inning with three runs on one hit.
Methodist put together a two-out rally in the top of the seventh when
Brian Goodwin singled and Peter Yuscket reached on an error.
Shawn Lovette folowed up with a double for Goodwin to score. Christopher Newport responded with seven runs in the bottom of the inning capitalizing on two defensive errors. The Monarchs left two runners on in the eighth, but the Captains finished with the 12-2 win.
The Monarchs had six players with one hit a piece.
Michael Mahaffey started on the mound pitching five innings with four strikeouts.
Kurt Kelly pitched 1.2 innings while
Alex Sholar went a third and Tre' Britt finished the final inning.
Ian Lenda earned the win for Christopher Newport.
The Monarchs will compete in the USA South Tournament Apr. 16-19 as the number two seed in Burlington, N.C. They will take on Averett on Thursday at 4:30 pm. For more information visit the
