NEWPORT NEWS, Va. - The Methodist women's tennis team captured their second straight USA South regular season conference championship finishing undefeated in conference play. The Monarchs knocked off Christopher Newport 9-0 Saturday afternoon.
Methodist took control early when they won all three doubles.
Kaitlin Flaherty and
Shannon Vivian won 8-0 at number one while
Lindsey Davis and
Dana Powell won 8-1 at number two.
Heather Brayton and
Cameron Tinkham finished the sweep with an 8-3 win at number three.
Vivian is currently chasing former teammate
Jenny Smith's singles record with 65 dual wins and won her 64th match with a 6-0, 6-0 victory at number two. Powell and Brayton also won 6-0, 6-0 at number four and five singles respectively. Flaherty won 6-1, 6-0 at number one and Davis won 6-1, 6-0 at number three. Tinkham won 6-3, 6-0 at number six to give the Monarchs the shutout.
Methodist has secured the top seed at the USA South Tournament in Burlington, N.C. The Monarchs will play the winner of the eight and nine seed match in the quarterfinals on Friday at 1 pm. More information can be found on the
