VIRGINIA BEACH, Va. - Virginia Wesleyan swept the Methodist softball in two non-conference games on Monday, defeating the Monarchs 5-0 and 4-2.
In game one, the Marlins took a two run lead in the first inning on one hit. The Monarchs put together a two-out rally in the top of the fourth, but left two runners stranded without scoring. Virginia Wesleyan came back and added three runs in the bottom of the sixth to earn the 5-0 win.
Alex Bass pitched the complete game scattering eight hits with six strikeouts. The Monarchs finished with four hits.
Virginia Wesleyan took the early lead in game two scoring three runs in the second inning on four hits. The Marlins added a run in the third inning to go up 4-0. In the top of the sixth inning,
Brittany Melton singled up the middle and moved to second on
Kayla Talbert's single. Melton scored on
Jody Eyler's single to get the Monarchs on the board. Talbert was ruled out on a fielder's choice, but Eyler was able to score on
Sara Poling's double down the right field line. Virginia Wesleyan got the final out and held the Monarchs scoreless in the seventh to win 4-2.
Emily Beck went the distance for the Monarchs giving up nine hits. Talbert finished 2-for-3 to lead the Monarchs.
The Monarchs will compete in the USA South Tournament beginning Friday at 11 am in Burlington, N.C.
