BURLINGTON, N.C. - The Meredith College women's tennis team avenged an earlier loss to the Monarchs with a 5-4 win in the USA South Tournament Championship.
The Methodist number one doubles team made up of
Shannon Vivian and
Kaitlin Flaherty rolled through their match to win 8-0 and give the Monarchs a 1-0 lead. With the win, Vivian broke former teammate
Lauren Hulse's career doubles wins record. Meredith won the next two matches with
Lindsey Davis and
Dana Powell falling 8-4 and
Cameron Tinkham and
Heather Brayton fell 8-6.
Davis lost at number three singles 6-1, 6-4 and Tinkham lost 6-2, 6-0 at number six for the Angels to take the 4-1 lead. Vivian won 6-4, 6-1 at number two before Meredith clinched the win with a victory over Powell 7-5, 6-2 at number four. Flaherty won at number one in a tiebreaker 4-6, 6-2, 10-8 and Brayton won 7-5, 6-3 at number five.
Flaherty and Vivian were both named to the All-Tournamment Team for finishing undefeated in the tournament.
