Methodist Baseball Sweeps Emory

Brian Inghram hit 3-for-6 with five RBI

ATLANTA, Ga. - The Methodist baseball team took the early lead over Emory and finished with a two game sweep over the Eagles winning 8-4 and 2-1 in Atlanta.

In the first game of the day, Brad Davis hit a RBI single to score Shawn Lovette and give the Monarchs a 1-0 lead. Lovette led off the third with a double and stole third before scoring on a groundout. Methodist put together four hits and capitalized on a defensive error to take the 5-0 lead in the top of the fifth. The Eagles got on the board in the fifth with a run, but Tripp Lancaster sparked a two-out rally in the top of the sixth to counter with a run. The Monarchs added two runs in the seventh to lead 8-1, but Emory tried to battle back in the bottom of the inning. The Eagles scored three runs, but Alex Sholar came in to pitch for the Monarchs and picked up the final two outs to earn the save and preserve the 8-4 win.

Lovette hit 3-for-5 in the game while Inghram went 2-for-3 with three RBI. Davis and Trey Such both added two hits a piece.  Landon Jordan went four innings to earn the win giving up just two hits with four strikeouts.

Neither team scored through the first two innings of game two, but the Monarchs scored on another two-out rally in the third inning. Lovette singled up the middle and Lancaster drew the walk before both players advanced on a stolen base. Inghram hit the two-RBI single to give Methodist the 2-0 lead. Emory took advantage of two walks and a double to score a run in the sixth, but the Monarchs turned the double play to hold their lead. Methodist finished with the 2-1 win.

Six different players had a hit for the Monarchs. Michael Mahaffey earned the win in 5.1 innings pitched giving up just two hits with two strikeouts. Sholar earned his second save of the day entering in relief.

The Monarchs will host their Alumni game on Saturday before finishing their regular season May 4-5 at Piedmont College.
