Monarchs Drop Two to Shenandoah

Methodist comes up short by one run in each game

FAYETTEVILLE, N.C. - Shenandoah jumped ahead of the Monarchs and Methodist could not recover as the Hornets won 1-0 and 2-1 in USA South softball action.

Shenandoah led off the first with runners on second and third but Methodist pitcher Jessica Pridgen struck out the next batter to end the inning. The Hornets took the 1-0 lead in the third inning on a RBI single from Jessi Heins. The Monarchs tried to rally in the bottom of the seventh after Jody Eyler reached on an error and Alex Bass singled to center, but Methodist left two runners stranded for Shenandoah to earn the 1-0 win.

Pridgen pitched the complete game giving up four hits with five strikeouts. Katie Haskins allowed just one hit for the Hornets with 12 strikeouts to earn the win.

In game two, Shenandoah used a two-out rally in the first inning to jump out to the 2-0 lead. Catherine Beuerle homered to left center and the Hornets added a single and double to move ahead. Crystal Metzger drew the lead-off walk for Methodist in the third and moved to second on a sacrifice by Tabatha Stephenson. Eyler singled to right center for Metzger to score, but the Monarchs could not get another run in. They left two runners stranded in the fourth to come up empty as Shenandoah held on for the 2-1 win.

Alex Bass took the loss for Methodist pitching the complete game with six strikeouts. Brooke Over pitched the complete game win for the Hornets allowing just four hits.

Methodist will travel to N.C. Wesleyan on Wednesday for another USA South doubleheader.
