Methodist Baseball Splits With Ferrum

FERRUM, Va. - The Methodist baseball team split with Ferrum in a doubleheader rescheduled from last month. The Monarchs won the first game 6-1 before falling 12-11 in game two.

Shawn Lovette sparked a rally in the top of the third when he singled and stole second base before scoring on Brian Inghram's single to right field. Ferrum tied the game in the bottom of the fifth after a leadoff walk.  Methodist took the lead in the seventh when Peter Yusckat led off with a single and scored an unearned run. Dustin Proctor homered in the eighth to give the Monarchs the 3-1 lead.  Methodist added three more runs in the ninth to take the 6-1 win.

Lovette, Proctor and Brian Goodwin each hit 2-for-4 in the win for the Monarchs. Elliott Bisplinghoff earned the win pitching eight innings allowing just three hits with four strikeouts.

Ferrum came back and jumped on the Monarchs with five runs in the first two innings. Tripp Lancaster doubled to left center in the top of the third and Brian Inghram put the Monarchs on the board with a home run to left field. The Panthers went up 7-2 in the bottom of the third, but Methodist battled back. Brian Halpin singled to center and Trey Such homered to move the Monarchs within three. Ferrum adds two more runs in the fourth before the Monarchs score four runs in the fifth moving within one run. The Panthers added another run to move ahead 10-8. Halpin and Such had RBI in the sixth for Methodist to tie the game at ten. Mike Twichell led off the seventh with a double and moved to third on a flyout before scoring on Lancaster's RBI single to left for Methodist to lead 11-10.  Ferrum put together four hits in the bottom of the eighth to take the 12-11 win.

Brad Davis hit 3-for-4 while Such finished 3-for-5. The Monarchs used a number of pitchers while Mike Mahaffey took the loss.

Methodist will travel to Christopher Newport this weekend for games Friday and Saturday.
