Methodist Volleyball Splits at USA South Tri-Match

Monarchs move to 11-4 on the season

RALEIGH, N.C. - The Methodist volleyball team opened up with a 3-0 (25-17, 25-18, 25-14) win over Mary Baldwin College, but then took a 2-3 (22-25, 25-19, 25-23, 19-25, 12-15) loss to Peace College in the final match of the day.

The Monarchs made quick work of Mary Baldwin (3-14, 1-6) opening up with a 6-0 run behind the serving of Methodist sophomore Kayci Miller. The Squirrels came back and tied the set at eight, but the Monarchs pulled away late to take the 25-17 win. The second set was tight early, but the Monarchs capitalized on Mary Baldwin errors to take the 25-18 win. A balanced attack in the third set helped Methodist cruise to the 25-14 win and the 3-0 match victory.

Freshman Stephanie Wood led the team with nine kills while senior Taylor Cates added seven. Miller finished with 27 assists and 10 digs while senior Jordan Grady led with 14 digs. Wood also added two solo blocks and two block assists for the Monarchs.

In Methodist's (11-4, 5-3) second match of the day, Peace (7-9, 3-3) came out battling and took the first set 22-25. The Pacers took the early lead in the second set, jumping out to an early 11-2 advantage, but the Monarchs battled back. Wood picked up a kill to give Methodist their first lead of the set at 16-15 and the Monarchs came back to win 25-19. The third set was back and forth with five ties, but Methodist finished with 15 kills to win 25-23. Peace came back and took control late in the fourth set to tie the match at two with a 19-25 win.

The Monarchs took an early 6-2 lead in the fifth set, but the Pacers came back to tie the set at 11. Both teams exchanged points before the score was tied again at 12. Peace scored the next three points to win 12-15 and earn the 2-3 match win.

Sophomore Jalesty Washington led the team with 16 kills against Peace. Wood finished with 13 and Cates added nine. Miller dished out 41 assists with 16 digs. Grady led with 27 digs while sophomores Rachel Evans and Kelsey Yates added 13 a piece.
