FAYETTEVILLE, N.C. - Lynchburg forced extra innings with a tying run in the top of the ninth, but the Monarchs came back to win 3-2 in the bottom of the tenth.
The Hornets (2-2) scored early after a lead-off walk and two singles to go ahead 1-0 in the top of the first. In the bottom of the third, senior
Brian Goodwin singled and stole second before scoring on junior
Brian Inghram's triple deep to right field.
Shawn Lovette grounded out to short, but Inghram scored to put the Monarchs up 2-1.
The Lynchburg offense left 11 runners on base through the first eight innings, unable to get the tying run. The Monarchs retired the first two batters in the top of the ninth, before the Hornets rallied to get two hits before scoring the tying run on a passed ball.
Methodist loaded the bases with no outs to start the ninth, but Bryan Breedlove came on to pitch for Lynchburg and struck out the next two batters before forcing a ground out to move to the tenth inning. Methodist sophomore
Rusty White kept the Hornets from reaching base to allow the Monarchs to take over in the bottom of the tenth. Inghram led off with a double back to right field and Lovette laid down the sacrifice to move Inghram to third. Sophomore
Trey Such's walk-off single drove Inghram in for the game-winning run.
Inghram finished 4-for-5 and freshman

Breedlove took the loss for the Hornets in 1.1 innings pitched. Ryan McDonough went the first five innings.
The Monarchs will host the Methodist/Diamond Baseball Invitational this weekend with their first game scheduled for Friday at 4 p.m. against Farmingdale State.
