Baseball Drops Two at Methodist Invitational

FAYETTEVILLE, N.C. - The Methodist baseball team dropped an 8-3 game to Huntingdon before coming up short to Frostburg State 9-4.

Huntingdon pitcher Alex Sanford improved to 3-2 on the season giving up just two runs off of three hits in seven innings of work. With the loss, Methodist fell to 5-2 on the season. Methodist starter Landon Jordan gave up six hits and five runs in five innings of work.

Huntingdon jumped out to an early 1-0 lead in the second which was quickly erased by a solo home run by sophomore Trey Such. Jordan gave up four runs in the fourth and Methodist fell behind 5-2. In the sixth, Huntingdon added three more runs to pull away 8-2.

In the eighth inning, Brian Goodwin led of with a walk and advanced to second on a Brian Inghram single. Shawn Lovette then singled to score Goodwin and pulled the Monarchs within five. Brian Halpin doubled to start the ninth followed by an Xavier Mayo single. The rally fell short as Huntingdon finished with the 8-3 win.

Inghram and Such finished 2-for-4 to lead the Monarchs and Such added two RBI.

The Monarchs followed up with a tightly contested contest with Frostburg State. The Bobcats scored two runs in the bottom of the second to take the early lead, but Methodist came back and tied it up in the top of the third on RBI singles from Inghram and Such.

In the top of the sixth, Goodwin led off with a walk before stealing second and scoring on Lovette's RBI single. The Monarchs added a run in the top of the seventh on a sacrifice fly from Tripp Lancaster, but Frostburg rallied to tie it up in the bottom of the seventh on a two-RBI double.

Methodist came up empty in the eighth allowing Frostburg to take the lead on a five-run streak. The Bobcats retired the first three batters in the top of the ninth to finish with the 9-4 win.

Inghram and Halpin finished 2-for-3 on the day. Sean Willingham started on the mound and went five innings giving up just one earned run with four strikeouts. The Monarchs used five different pitchers in relief.

The Monarchs will be back in action on Sunday at 4 p.m. when they conclude the Methodist/Diamond Invitational against Roanoke College.
