GREENSBORO, N.C. - The Monarchs battled back to send the first game of a doubleheader against Guilford to extra innings, but the Quakers prevailed 5-4 before taking game two 10-4.
Guilford took the early lead in the second inning before tacking on three runs in the fifth to lead 4-0. In the top of the seventh, the Monarchs rallied sparked by a single from freshman
Alex Winters. Senior
Cortney Kerns singled to third and
Jordan Adams reached on an error to load the bases. Junior
Darci Martin came to the plate with two outs and hit a grand slam to tie the game at four. The Monarchs held the Quakers scoreless in the bottom of the inning to send the game to extra innings. Methodist came up empty in the top of the eighth and Guilford took the 5-4 win.
Kerns finished 2-for-3 on the day while Martin finished 1-for-2 with four RBI.
Methodist took the 2-0 lead in the top of the first during game one, but Guilford tied the game in the bottom of the inning. In the top of the second, The Monarchs went ahead 4-2 with a RBI singles from Kerns and Winters. The Quakers rattled off a five-run fourth inning to go ahead 7-4 and tacked on three runs in the sixth to finish with the 10-4 win.
Freshmen
Jordan Adams and
Natalie Drum went 2-for-4 in the game while senior
Crystal Metzger was 1-for-4 with two RBI.
The Monarchs will take on Cabrini Feb. 28 at 1 p.m. in Myrtle Beach, S.C.
