ATLANTA, Ga. - The Methodist women's tennis team dropped a hard fought battle with Huntingdon 5-4 before coming back to shutout Oglethorpe 9-0 on Sunday.
Huntingdon took the 2-1 lead after doubles defeating
Kaitlin Flaherty and
Katherine Meindl 3-8 at the number one spot and
Heather Brayton and
Kelli Shelton 6-8 at number three.
Rachel Purser and
Dana Powell won the number two doubles match 8-5.
Flaherty came back with a 7-5, 6-3 win at number one singles and Purser won 6-2, 1-6, 7-6 at number three. Meindl lost 3-6, 4-6 at number two and Brayton lost 3-6, 1-6 at number four. Powell won 6-3, 6-3 at five singles while Shelton lost 6-2, 4-6, 0-6.
The Monarchs came back and swept Oglethorpe with a 9-0 shutout. Flaherty and Meindl won 8-0 at number one doubles while Purser and Powell won 8-5 at number two.
Jennifer Hamel and
Stacey Brooks finished up doubles with an 8-1 victory at number three.
Flaherty took the number one singles match 6-1, 6-0 and Meindl won 7-6, 6-3 at the two spot. Brayton won 7-5, 6-3 at number three and Powell won 7-6, 7-6 at number four. Shelton won 7-6, 6-0 at number five and Hamel won 7-6, 6-3 at number six.
The Monarchs will host Mary Washington next Saturday in their home opener scheduled for 9:30 a.m. before they travel across town to Fayetteville State for a 1:30 p.m. match.
