FAYETTEVILLE, N.C. - The Methodist baseball team took the early 2-0 lead before Christopher Newport tied it up in the sixth. The Monarchs scored three additional runs and held on for the 5-2 lead over the Captains.
Methodist left a runner stranded on third in the first and second inning before Methodist junior
Brian Inghram put the Monarchs on the board with a two-run home run to left center.
Christopher Newport tied the game on solo home runs in the fifth and sixth innings, but the Monarchs battled back to regain the lead in the bottom of the sixth. Freshman
Xavier Mayo hit a RBI single to score
Shawn Lovette for the eventual game-winning run.
Methodist added two insurance runs in the eighth on a single from
Matt Quick after a lead-off double from
Brian Halpin and Mayo reached on an error.
Landon Jordan pitched the first 5.2 innings for the Monarchs striking out six and allowing five hits.
Kurt Kelly finished on the mound to earn the win without giving up a hit in 3.1 innings.
Josh Brinkman took the loss for the Captains going six innings on the mound.
Mayo and Quick both went 2-for-4 for the Monarchs. Inghram and Quick each had two RBI.
Methodist and Christopher Newport will play the second game of the conference series at Armstrong-Shelley Field Sunday at 2 p.m.
