FAYETTEVILLE, N.C. - The Methodist University women's tennis team had a busy Saturday with a morning match hosting 14th ranked Mary Washington followed up with traveling across town to NCAA Division II Fayetteville State.
The Monarchs dropped a hard fought 9-0 loss to Mary Washington.
Rachel Purser and
Dana Powell lost 8-1 at number two doubles and
Heather Brayton and
Kelli Shelton lost 8-1 at number three before
Kaitlin Flaherty and
Katherine Meindl battled to an 8-6 loss at number one.
Mary Washington finished the sweep at singles with Flaherty dropping number one singles 6-0, 6-4 and Meindl lost 6-2, 6-1 at number two. Purser lost 6-1, 6-2 at number three and Brayton lost 3-6, 6-2, 10-4 at number four. Powell lost 6-2, 6-0 and Shelton lost 6-0, 6-1.
Methodist turned it around at Fayetteville State and swept the Broncos 9-0. Powell and Purser won 8-2 and
Jennifer Hamel and
Stacey Brooks won 8-0 at number two doubles.
Lindsie Bentham and
Jessica Britt won 8-0 at number three doubles.
Flaherty won the number one singles match 6-0, 6-0 and Meindl won 6-0, 6-0 at number two. Brayton and Shelton won 6-0, 6-0 at number three and four and
Brittany Britt won 6-0, 6-0 at number five.
Jessica Britt finished the shutout with a 6-1, 6-2 win at number six singles.
The Monarchs will host Bridgewater next Saturday, Mar. 6 at 12 p.m.
