FAYETTEVILLE, N.C. - Both teams scored a run in the first inning, but Christopher Newport added a run in the third and tacked on five in the sixth to earn the 7-1 victory over Methodist Sunday afternoon.
The Captains scored an early run on a two-out rally to take the 1-0 lead, but Methodist came back and tied the game in the bottom of the first.
Tripp Lancaster led off with a single to center and moved to second on
Brian Goodwin's sacrifice. Lancaster stole third and scored on the throwing error.
The Captains put together two hits in the third to score their second run and take the 2-1 lead. The Monarchs had runners on first and second in the fourth, but could not capitalize. CNU had four hits in the sixth to open up the 7-1 lead. The Monarchs loaded the bases in the eighth, but the Captains' defense held the lead to finish with the 7-1 win.
Six different Methodist players finished with a hit, but the Monarchs stranded 11 on base. Tre' Britt pitched 5.1 innings allowing five hits and striking out four.
Sean Willingham,
Kurt Kelly and
Rusty White all entered in relief.
Sean Chitsaz earned his second win of the season for CNU pitching six innings giving up four hits.
The Monarchs will host Immaculata on Tuesday at 4 p.m.
