FAYETTEVILLE, N.C. - The Methodist baseball team bounced back from a loss to No. 8/23 Shenandoah to power past the Hornets with a 13-1 win in eight innings on Sunday.
The Monarchs (13-6, 3-3) jumped out to the early 3-0 lead in the bottom of the first after
Shawn Lovette and
Brian Inghram drew walks and
Trey Such hit a home run deep over the fence in right. Methodist came back and added six runs in the third inning sparked by a lead-off single from Inghram.
Matt Quick and
Ryan Stack both had two-RBI doubles during the rally.
Tripp Lancaster and Lovette also picked up RBI to finish off the inning.
The Hornets (11-4, 3-3) responded with an unearned run in the top of the fourth, but the Monarchs came right back with two runs in the bottom of the inning after another home run from Such and a sacrifice fly from
Tyler Younger to score
Brian Halpin.
Methodist added a run in the sixth and the eighth to finish with the 13-1 win and snap Shenandoah's eight-game winning streak.
Halpin led the Monarchs hitting 4-for-5 from the plate while Such and
Brian Goodwin went 3-for-5. Such finished with four RBI and Quick added three.
Kurt Kelly earned the win on the mound pitching seven innings giving up just five hits with no earned runs.
Sean Willingham pitched the final inning of relief.
The Monarchs will host Rhodes on Wednesday with a 4 p.m. start.
