FAYETTEVILLE, N.C. - The Methodist softball team fought back to win 8-7 in game one over Greensboro College before coming up short 1-0 in the second game of the day.
The Pride took the early 2-0 lead, but the Monarchs came back and tied the game in the fourth after capitalizing on a Greensboro error. The Pride took the 3-2 lead in the fourth with a home run before Heather Nellis gave Greensboro the 7-2 advantage in the fifth with a grand slam.
Methodist rallied to tie the game in the sixth tying the game on a bases clearing double from
Jody Eyler. Methodist pitcher
Emily Beck retired the first three Greensboro batters in the bottom of the sixth giving the Monarchs a chance to take the lead in the seventh.
Kimber Hall drew the lead-off walk and moved to second on
Katie Scheller's sacrifice.
Cortney Kerns moved Hall to third on a fly ball to center and
Jordan Adams came up with the eventual game-winning RBI single to score Hall.
Lysuelle Slaughter entered in the bottom of the seventh to pitch and held the Pride scoreless to earn the save and preserve the 8-7 win.
Emily Beck got the win in 6.0 innings pitched.
Darci Martin went 2-for-3 at the plate for the Monarchs. Adams, Eyler and
Katie Byrd added two hits a piece.
Methodist out hit the Pride 7-5 in the second game of the doubleheader, but it was Greensboro who finished with the 1-0 win. After six and a half scoreless innings, the Pride mounted a two-out rally to score an unearned run in the bottom of the seventh.
The Monarchs'
Alex Bass pitched the complete game scattering five hits and striking out six. Byrd and
Crystal Metzger were 2-for-3 in the game.
The Monarchs will host Averett in a USA South doubleheader on Saturday beginning at 1 p.m.
