FAYETTEVILLE, N.C. - The Methodist softball team picked up two big wins on Saturday over Averett University. After cruising to the 9-3 win in game one, the Monarchs came from behind to win 5-4 in game two.
Darci Martin gave the Monarchs the 2-0 lead in the bottom of the first with a home run down the left field line after
Jordan Adams led off with a single. Methodist added two runs in the third with RBI from
Katie Byrd and Martin to move ahead 4-0. Averett got on the board in the fourth with a run, but the Monarchs came back with three runs for the 7-1 lead.
The Cougars came away with two runs in the fifth, but Methodist finished up with with two additional runs to earn the 9-3 win.
Martin finished 3-for-4 with five RBI. Adams and
Cortney Kerns were also 3-for-4 in the game.
Heather Anderson earned the win in four innings pitched.
Emily Beck and
Lysuelle Slaughter finished in relief.
Averett started off the second game with a run in the first, but Methodist evened the score with a RBI single from Martin to score Kerns. After three and a half scoreless innings, Methodist rallied in the fifth after
Crystal Metzger drew the lead-off walk.
Katie Scheller sacrificed her to second and Adams' groundout moved her to third. Kerns hit a double deep in left field to score Metzger for the 2-1 lead. Kerns moved to third on a wild pitch and scored on a single by Byrd for the 3-1 lead.
The Cougars came back in the sixth with three unearned runs to take the 4-3 lead, but Methodist battled back in the bottom of the inning.
Kimber Hall singled and moved to second on the sacrifice from
Alyssa Hara.
Christina Selbe was hit by a pitch for runners at first and second and Adams singled through the left side to allow pinch runner
Courtney Blann to score the tying run. Kerns followed up with a single back through the left side to allow pinch runner Scheller to score for the 5-4 lead.
Methodist shut down Averett in the top of the seventh to earn the win.
Alex Bass went 6.0 innings with five strikeouts for the win while Slaughter picked up a save in relief.
Kerns finished 3-for-4 with two RBI. Byrd, Martin and Hall had two hits a piece.
The Monarchs will travel to Meredith on Wednesday for another USA South doubleheader.
