Methodist Baseball Comes From Behind to Win 4-3

Monarchs capitalized on defensive errors

VIRGINIA BEACH, Va. - After holding a 2-0 lead after six innings, the Methodist baseball team found themselves behind 3-2 heading into the ninth inning, but put together a two-run rally to win 4-3 over Virginia Wesleyan.

After four scoreless innings, the Monarchs (12-5) got on the board in the fifth inning with an unearned run from Tyler Younger after a leadoff single to center field. Brian Goodwin got on base in the sixth with a fielder's choice and after stealing second, scored on a defensive error.

The Marlins scored a run on two hits in the bottom of the seventh before taking the lead in the eighth with two runs on a walk and two hits.

Trailing by a run heading into the ninth, Matt Quick started things off for the Monarchs with a single through the left side. Brandon Thigpen reached second on an error moving Quick to third. Quinn Lancaster entered to run for Thigpen and Quick tied the game on a single from Tripp Lancaster while Quinn Lancaster moved to third. Quinn Lancaster went on to score what would be the game-winning run on a wild pitch.

Rusty White shut down the side in the bottom of the ninth to earn the win on the mound with 2.0 innings pitched. Sean Willingham pitched 6.0 scoreless innings with seven strikeouts while Tre' Britt entered in the seventh.

Trey Such led the Monarchs at the plate hitting 3-for-5. Tripp Lancaster was 2-for-5 and Quick finished 2-for-4.

The Monarchs will host Shenandoah in a two-game USA South series this weekend. The teams will face off Saturday at 1 p.m. and Sunday at 2 p.m.
