Monarchs Split With Shenandoah

Crystal Metzger hit 5-for-5 for the day

FAYETTEVILLE, N.C. - The Methodist softball team dropped their first game 9-4 to Shenandoah before coming back with a 7-5 win in game two.

The Hornets jumped out on top early with a run in the first and four runs in the second for the 5-0 lead. The Monarchs scored two runs in the third with a RBI triple by Katie Byrd and a RBI single from Darci Martin. Shenandoah countered with two runs in the bottom of the third and added one in the fourth to lead 8-2 through six. 

Methodist's Jordan Adams hit a two-RBI single in the sixth, but the Hornets added a run in the bottom of the inning to finish with the 9-4 win.

Byrd finished 3-for-4 with a RBI to lead the Monarchs. Alex Bass pitched 4.1 innings giving up four hits with five strikeouts for the loss. Lysuelle Slaughter pitched 1.2 innings of relief.

The Methodist offense got hot to open game two with five runs on six hits including a three-run home run by Kimber Hall. Shenandoah came back with three runs in the bottom of the first, but Methodist held them off with another RBI triple by Byrd in the fourth for the 6-3 lead. The Hornets scored two runs in the fifth, but an insurance run in the seventh gave Methodist the 7-5 win.

Crystal Metzger hit 4-for-4 in the game while Byrd finished 2-for-3. Emily Beck pitched 4.1 innings scattering nine hits for the win. Slaughter went 2.2 innings of relief for the save.

The Monarchs finish 13-5 in USA South play with conference tournament seeding to be finalized later this afternoon. The tournament begins on Friday, April 16 in Burlington, N.C..
