FAYETTEVILLE, N.C. - Offense took over on Sunday as Emory outlasted the Methodist baseball team 10-7.
Methodist scored first with a run in the first inning, but Emory took the lead in the second inning when Jay Page hit a two-run home run. The Eagles added a run in the third, but Methodist countered with
Brian Inghram's solo home run in the bottom of the inning to cut the lead to one.
In the bottom of the fourth,
Xavier Mayo singled and scored on a triple by
Tripp Lancaster. Lancaster scored on a sacrifice by
Shawn Lovette for the 4-3 advantage. The lead was short lived as Emory came back with five runs on five hits in the fifth. The Monarchs rallied in the bottom of the inning with two runs, but Emory held the 8-6 lead.
The Eagles increased the lead to 10-6 in the seventh inning. Mayo led off the ninth with a single through the left side. He stole second and scored on a single from Inghram, but Emory shut down the offense to earn the 10-7 win.
Inghram hit 3-for-4 with three RBI. Lancaster finished 3-for-5 on the day with two triples.
Landon Jordan pitched 4.2 innings with three strikeouts and 10 hits.
Kurt Kelly, Tre' Britt and
Rusty White all pitched in relief.
The Monarchs have earned the No. 2 seed in the USA South Athletic Conference Tournament set to begin Thursday, Apr. 15 in Burlington, N.C. Methodist will take on No. 7 Greensboro at 4:30 p.m.
