FAYETTEVILLE, N.C. - After dropping the first game 5-3, Methodist came back to take the lead over Virginia Wesleyan 5-3 in game two but the Marlins finished with the 6-5 win.
The Monarchs loaded the bases in the first, but it was Virginia Wesleyan who scored the first run of the game in the second inning on a RBI single by Jackie Jarzynka. The Marlins added a run in the third before taking the 3-0 lead in the fifth.
Methodist responded in the bottom of the fifth when
Cortney Kerns doubled to left and moved to third on a groundout before scoring on
Darci Martin's single back to Virginia Wesleyan pitcher Brittaney Brown. The Marlins extended their lead to 5-1 in the top of the seventh, but the Monarchs rallied in the bottom of the inning.
Jordan Adams drew the lead-off walk and Kerns doubled to center to move Adams to third. Adams scored on a wild pitch and Kerns went onto score on a groundout by
Katie Byrd, but Virginia Wesleyan held on for the 5-3 win.
Kerns and Martin finished 3-for-4 for the Monarchs while
Katie Scheller hit 2-for-3.
Brown earned her 21st win for the Marlins while
Emily Beck went the distance for Methodist for the loss.
After two scoreless innings to start game two, Virginia Wesleyan got on board in the third with two sacrifice flies. Methodist's
Alex Winters led off the bottom of the inning with a double and
Jordan Adams laid down the bunt single. Adams stole second and Martin doubled down the left field line to score both runners and tie the game.
The Marlins regained the lead with an unearned run in the top of the sixth, but Methodist responded with a two-out rally in the bottom of the inning to take the 5-3 lead with RBI from Winters, Adams and Kerns. Virginia Wesleyan came right back in the top of the seventh to draw two walks before Morgan Reynolds hit a home run off the top of the fence in left center to go ahead 6-5. Brittaney Brown entered in the bottom of the seventh for Virginia Wesleyan pitcher Christina Crawford to shut down the Methodist offense and pick up the save.
Adams and Winters finished 2-for-3 in the game while Kerns and
Kimber Hall hit 2-for-4.
Alex Bass pitched six innings with seven strikeouts while
Lysuelle Slaughter finished in relief to take the loss.
