Women's Tennis Wins Two

FAYETTEVILLE, N.C. - The Methodist women's tennis team picked up two wins on Saturday over Shenandoah University and Agnes Scott College.

In the first match of the day, the Monarchs earned a 9-0 USA South win to move to 7-0 in the conference. Methodist won all three doubles matches by a score of 8-2. Kaitlin Flaherty and Katherine Meindl played at number one while Heather Brayton and Rachel Purser teamed up at number two. Kelli Shelton and Jennifer Hamel played number three.

Flaherty and Meindl both won 6-0, 6-0 at number one and two singles respectively. Brayton won 6-1, 6-0 at number three and Dana Powell won 6-1, 6-1 at number four. Shelton won 6-0, 6-0 at number five and Stacey Brooks earned the 6-1, 6-0 win at number six.

Methodist opened up a 2-1 lead after doubles over Agnes Scott. Flaherty and Meindl won 9-7 at number one while Powell and Purser lost 9-7 at number two. Hamel and Brayton won 8-3 at number three.

The Monarchs kept up the pressure winning four out six singles matches. Flaherty won 6-0, 6-3 at number one and Meindl won 6-3, 6-0 at number two. Purser lost 6-4, 7-6 (5) at number three and Brayton lost 6-2, 6-0 at number four. Powell won 6-2, 6-3 at number five and Shelton won 6-4, 6-3 to help the Monarchs to the 6-3 win.

The Monarchs will travel to N.C. Wesleyan on Wednesday for a 3:30 p.m. match.
