Greensboro, N.C. - The Methodist baseball team jumped out to an early 6-0 lead and held on for the 8-7 victory over Guilford College.
The Monarchs scored a run in the second and
Shawn Lovette homered in the third for the early 2-0 lead. Methodist added two unearned runs in the fourth and moved ahead 6-0 in the fifth with RBI from
Trey Such and
Brian Goodwin.
Guilford rallied in the sixth with three runs on five hits before Such hit a two-run home run in the top of the seventh for the 8-3 lead. The Quakers tallied two runs in the seventh and one in the eighth to move within two runs. They kept the pressure on with a two-out rally in the bottom of the ninth but Methodist reliever
Rusty White earned a strikeout for the final out of the game and the Monarchs' 8-7 win.
Tre' Britt took the win on the mound scattering six hits in 5.2 innings with six strikeouts.
John Markley and
Landon Jordan pitched an inning a piece with White finishing with his fifth save of the season.
Such led the Monarchs at the plate hitting 3-for-5 with three RBI. Goodwin was 2-for-4 and
Xavier Mayo was 1-for-4 with two RBI.
The Monarchs will travel to Lynchburg for a 3 p.m. game Wednesday.
