LYNCHBURG, Va. - The Methodist baseball team scored first, but had to come from behind to knock off Lynchburg College 14-12 on Wednesday.
Brian Inghram hit a solo home run in the first to give the Monarchs the lead before the Hornets came back with three runs in the second to take the lead. In the top of the third, the Monarchs rallied to tie the game at three after RBI from
Brian Halpin and
Brian Goodwin. Methodist took advantage of defensive errors in the fourth to take the 6-3 lead. In the bottom of the fourth Lynchburg cut the lead to one with two runs.
Tripp Lancaster singled in the fifth to score
Matt Quick in the fifth and added a run in the sixth plus two in the seventh to lead 10-5. Lynchburg scored two runs in the seventh and two in the eighth to move within one run, but the Monarchs rattled off four runs in the top of the ninth thanks to a grand slam from Inghram. The Hornets scored two runs in the bottom of the ninth, but Methodist stifled the rally to win 14-12.
Inghram finished 2-for-2 with six RBI. Halpin was 4-for-6,
Tyler Younger hit 3-for-6 while Lancaster and
Ryan Stack were 2-for-2.
The Monarchs used four different pitchers with
Kurt Kelly earning the win with 3.2 innings pitched scattering six hits.
Rusty White earned the save.
Methodist will host Emory on Saturday at 1 p.m.
