ROCKY MOUNT, N.C. - The Methodist women's tennis team was down 2-1 after doubles, but battled back with five singles wins to earn the 6-3 victory over N.C. Wesleyan College.
Kaitlin Flaherty and
Katherine Meindl won 8-1 at number one doubles while
Rachel Purser and
Dana Powell lost 8-5 at number two.
Jennifer Hamel and
Heather Brayton lost 8-6 at number two.
Meindl got the Monarchs' going at the number two singles match with a quick 6-0, 6-2 victory, tying the match at two. Purser won 6-2, 6-3 at number three to give Methodist the lead and Flaherty earned a 6-2, 6-1 win at number one for the 4-2 advantage. The remaining Methodist singles matches took the court with the Monarchs needing one more to clinch the win. Brayton lost 6-2, 6-3 at number four before Powell won 6-4, 6-1 at number five for the match.
Kelli Shelton split her first two sets 6-1, 3-6 before earning the 10-8 win in a super tiebreaker.
The Monarchs will finish out the regular season on Saturday when they host Christopher Newport on Saturday at 11 a.m. With the win tonight, Methodist secured at least a share of the USA South Regular Season Championship but could earn it outright with a win on Saturday.
