STAUNTON, Va. - The Methodist softball team made quick work of Mary Baldwin College as they cruised to 11-7 and 21-5 victories.
The Monarchs jumped out to the 11-0 lead after three innings thanks in part to a three-run home run by
Darci Martin.
Alex Bass held the Squirrels without a hit through three, but Mary Baldwin got on the board with two runs in the fourth. They added three in the fifth and tried to make a run in the seventh, but Methodist prevailed with the 11-7 win.
Martin finished 2-for-3 with four RBI while
Cortney Kerns and
Katie Byrd added two hits a piece. Bass earned the win while
Heather Anderson pitched the final three innings of relief.
Methodist came up empty in the first inning of game two, but rattled off eight hits for nine runs in the second inning. Byrd hit her second career home run with runners on first and second. Mary Baldwin put together three hits in the bottom of the second for a run, but the Monarchs extended their lead to 14-0 after four innings. The Methodist offense kept up the pressure in the fifth scoring seven runs including a two-run home run by
Emily Beck right after
Alyssa Hara hit a bases-clearing double. The Squirrels scored four runs in the bottom of the inning, but the Monarchs finished with the 21-5 win in five innings.
Lysuelle Slaughter earned the win with eight strikeouts in five innings. Twelve different Monarchs picked up a hit in the win with
Kimber Hall and
Katie Scheller both hitting 2-for-2.
The Monarchs will be at Shenandoah on Saturday to take on the Hornets in the final USA South doubleheader at 12 p.m.
