FAYETTEVILLE, N.C. - The Methodist baseball team picked up an 8-5 win over Piedmont before dropping a 5-0 loss to York (Pa.).
Piedmont scored the first run of game one before Methodist countered with two doubles from
Brian Halpin and
Brian Goodwin. The Lions went ahead 2-1 in the third inning, but
Trey Such hit a two-run home run in the fourth for the Monarchs' first lead of the game at 3-2.
Tyler Younger hit a two-run home run of his own in the sixth to give Methodist the 5-2 lead. The Monarchs loaded the bases in the seventh and came away with three runs for the 8-2 advantage.
Piedmont rallied in the ninth with four hits to move within three runs, but the Monarchs held on for the 8-5 win.
Xavier Mayo went 2-for-3 in the game while
Tripp Lancaster and
Brian Inghram finished 2-for-4.
Tre' Britt earned his fifth win of the season pitching 8.2 innings with 11 strikeouts.
Rusty White recorded the final out for his seventh save.
After four scoreless innings in game two, York got on the board with two runs in the fifth. The Spartans added one in the sixth and the eighth to move ahead 4-0.
Matt Quick and
Tripp Lancaster reached base in the eighth but were left stranded. York tallied a final run in the ninth and pitcher Jason Christenberry retired the first three Methodist batters in the bottom of the inning to preserve the 5-0 shutout.
Younger led the Monarchs with two of their four hits in the game. Lancaster and Quick added one a piece.
Kurt Kelly pitched 7.1 innings to take the loss.
Hunter Ennis finished in relief.
Methodist and York will be back to finish the weekend on Sunday at 2 p.m.
