FAYETTEVILLE, N.C. - The Methodist men's soccer team was picked fourth in the USA South Athletic Conference preseason poll, but the Monarchs are anxious to exceed expectations this season.

Head coach Justin Terranova brought back 12 returners along with a number of newcomers for the new season. Last season the Monarchs finished third in the conference with a 10-10 overall record.

"Our record was not a good reflection of how good our team was," senior Brion Kelly said. "We showed a lot of heart and determination and I'm hoping we will bring that same determination this year."

With the graduation of Bret Brennan, sophomore Scott Smith returns as the team's leading goal scorer with six goals last season. Kelly has been a mainstay on the Monarchs' defense and junior Kyle Beach returns between the pipes.

"I have very high expecations," Kelly added. "With so many returners back and the talent in our freshmen class, we hope to make a run at the USA South Championship."

The team has been training for the last two weeks in preparation for the new season with the conference championship always on their mind.

"We have been working to improve our fitness," sophomore Shane Davis said. "We have a lot to prove with so many freshmen, but with such a solid core, we're confident heading into the season."

The team begins their season at Lynchburg College on Wednesday at 6 p.m. as the first of five road games before hosting Chowan University in their first home game Sept. 15. USA South action begins Oct. 2 when the Monarchs host Shenandoah.

"Lynchburg will be a really good test for us after being ranked No. 24 in the national preseason poll," Davis said. "It is a great way to start the year and see if we're ready."
