Box Score LYNCHBURG, Va. - The Methodist men's soccer team opened up the season with a 2-0 win over nationally ranked Lynchburg College Wednesday night.
Lynchburg opened the game with the first three shots and held an 8-4 shot advantage, before Methodist sophomore
Shane Davis gave the Monarchs the 1-0 lead with a goal on the assist from senior
Brion Kelly in the 37th minute.
Methodist held the lead at halftime and kept battling to create opportunities throughout the second half. With just over ten minutes to play freshmen
Eric McGinnis and
Clayton Newton created a two versus one situation before McGinnis fed the ball to Newton for the team's second goal and Newton's first collegiate goal.
The Hornets finished with a 25-13 shot advantage over the Monarchs, but Methodist goalkeeper
Kyle Beach had six saves in the game to preserve the shutout. Michael Henry made five stops for Lynchburg.
The Monarchs will compete at Roanoke College this weekend with their next game scheduled against Salem International on Friday at 5 p.m.
