FAYETTEVILLE, N.C. - Shenandoah struck first, but the Methodist women's soccer team earned a tie with a goal in the 86th minute of play.

Methodist (6-1-1, 0-0-1) narrowly edged the Hornets (3-2-3, 0-0-1) 5-4 in shots during the first half, but Shenandoah came out firing in the second half and split the defense to score a goal in the 47th minute of play.

The Monarchs kept plugging away creating opportunities including Lauren Colenda"s shot just over the crossbar and Danielle Minichello's shot off the post. With less than five minutes to play, Jillian Reed crossed the ball inside to Minichello and Minichello collected the ball inside the six-yard box and slipped it in the goal to tie the game at one.

Neither team would score during the remainder of regulation nor two 10-minute overtime periods leaving the first USA South Athletic Conference game of the season for both teams tied at one.

Methodist goalkeeper Kasey Nichols made 10 saves while Kat Terza had two stops for the Hornets.

Methodist will be back to host Mary Baldwin on Sunday at 2 p.m.
