Box Score FAYETTEVILLE, N.C. - Averett and Methodist men's soccer teams looked evenly matched during the first half on Wednesday, but the Monarchs' offense exploded in the second half to take the 5-1 win.
Methodist had four early shot opportunities, but the ball spent most of the time in the midfield with neither team breaking free.
Eric McGinnis gave Methodist the 1-0 lead in the 27th minute after a flick-on from
Eirik Nordseth. The Monarchs took the one goal lead into the locker room at halftime.
Methodist came back out and scored two quick goals in the first five minutes of the second half to set the tone. Nordseth received a ball in from
Clayton Newton and scored with a shot off the post and into the back of the net. Newton fed another ball into off of a corner kick and
Jeff Fallier buried the header for his second goal of the season. Averett got on the board with a goal in the 63rd minute, but the Monarchs responded with a replay of the second goal just four minutes later. McGinnis added an insurance goal in the 74th minute off the cross from Christian Kapper and another flick from Nordseth.
With both teams ranked No. 9 in the most recent NSCAA regional poll, the Monarchs came out ready to play. Nordseth finished with two goals and two assists while McGinnis added two goals and Newton had three assists. Methodist goalkeeper
Kyle Beach had three saves while Nate Barker made four stops for Averett.
Methodist will take the road this weekend traveling up to No. 3 Christopher Newport on Saturday for a 7 p.m. kickoff.
