Box Score NEWPORT NEWS, Va. - No. 2, according to D3Soccer.com, Christopher Newport University took the early lead and finished with the 3-0 lead to give the Methodist men's soccer team its first conference loss.

Methodist (8-3-2, 2-1) dominated possession in the first half, but the Captains (12-0-1, 4-0)  took the 1-0 lead after a long ball played in was deflected into the Monarchs' goal in the eighth minute. Methodist's Patrick VanCura had a great chance at the other end giving Methodist the corner kick off of goalkeeper Justin Wolfe's save. The Captains took the 2-0 lead in the 34th minute on a build up through the center of the field for Brian Lybert to finish to the far post.

Eric McGinnis missed just wide left in the 40th minute breaking free beyond the CNU defense, but the Captains held the 2-0 lead at half. Eirik Nordseth opened the second half with a shot on goal, but Christopher Newport added an insurance goal in the 69th minute. The Monarchs finished with eight shots compared to CNU's nine, a closer picture of the play than the score might suggest.

Methodist's Kyle Beach finished with five saves in goal while Wolfe had two stops for CNU.

The Monarchs move into a three-way tie for second place in the USA South along with N.C. Wesleyan College and Greensboro College. Methodist will be in action again on Wednesday when they travel to N.C. Wesleyan for a 3:30 p.m. kickoff.
