Box Score ARLINGTON, Va. - The Methodist men's soccer team held a 2-1 lead at halftime, but after Marymount tied the game in the second half, it took a late goal in the 97th minute for the Monarchs to win 3-2.
Methodist had a chance to win it in the final seconds of regulation, but the goal was called back ruled the shot was taken after the final horn. The Monarchs' first shot in overtime was saved, but after two corner kick opportunities,
Eirik Nordseth and
Clayton Newton connected on a give and go for Nordseth to beat the goalkeeper with a goal to the far post.
Marymount scored the first goal of the game in the 13th minute, but the Monarchs came back and tied the game less than five minutes later. Newton slid a pass through the middle and
Eric McGinnis beat the Marymount keeper in a 1v1 opportunity. McGinnis gave Methodist the lead with his second goal of the game in the 22nd minute with a shot over the keeper's head. The Monarchs held the 2-1 lead at halftime, but after being dealt a red card just before the break, the Monarchs would have to play the remainder of the game a man down.
The Saints tied the game in the 52nd minute with a header off a free kick and both teams battled to break the tie. Nordseth scored the game-winner in the 97th minute for the Monarchs to win their fifth straight.
Patrick Hamel finished with five saves for Methodist. Mike Madigan had five stops for Marymount.
Methodist will be back in action on Saturday when they host Roanoke at 1 p.m.
