Box Score FAYETTEVILLE, N.C. - The Methodist men's soccer team came through with a 3-1 win over Ferrum College in the regular season finale Saturday afternoon.
The Monarchs kicked off the day recognizing four seniors
Jeff Fallier,
Patrick VanCura,
Darren Wilson and
Kyle Beach for their outstanding contributions to Methodist soccer. The team supported the seniors right off the bat on the field dominating possession early and often.
Methodist got on the board in the 22nd minute when
Miguel Flores fed
Eric McGinnis down the left flank. McGinnis centered the ball to the 18-yard box and
Eirik Nordseth finished with a shot to the lower left corner for the 1-0 lead. Late in the half, Ferrum got on the board with a shot that hit in front of the goal mouth and bounced up over Methodist's diving goalkeeper
Kyle Beach.
With the score still tied at one at halftime, Methodist kept battling to take control.
Chris Ryan broke free down the right side and Nordseth scored his second goal of the day with a header to the back post in the 64th minute. The Monarchs added an insurance goal in the 70th minute when
Jeff Fallier headed in
Clayton Newton's corner kick.
Kyle Beach had two saves while
Patrick Hamel made one. Walter Romano had eight stops for Ferrum.
The Monarchs are still awaiting the result of N.C. Wesleyan and Shenandoah postponed until Sunday. If N.C. Wesleyan wins, Methodist will finish third and host either Shenandoah or Ferrum based on a coin toss. If Shenandoah wins, the Monarchs will finish second and host Ferrum. Regardless, the Monarchs will host a first round game on Tuesday at 2:30 p.m.
