Box Score FAYETTEVILLE, N.C. - Methodist and Ferrum battled in the first round of the USA South Tournament after just seeing each other three days earlier in the regular season finale. The Monarchs came out firing and jumped out to the quick 5-0 lead in the first half.
Eric McGinnis put the Monarchs on top in the fourth minute after
Chris Ryan's pass split the defense giving McGinnis a one vs. one opportunity. McGinnis buried to the lower left corner for the 1-0 lead. Ryan had another great feed from the right flank up to McGinnis who slid the ball over to teammate
Eirik Nordseth for the 2-0 lead in the 17th minute. Ryan took on the defense himself in the 22nd minute scored on a bending ball to the near post just outside the 18-yard box. Nordseth scored his second goal of the game in the 25th minute on another pass from McGinnis. Just two and a half minutes later Nordseth made it a hat trick on what looked like a duplicate of the second goal thanks to assists from Ryan and
Clayton Newton.
Methodist used multiple players in the second half with the opportunity to share the playing time.
Hank Tobener scored the final goal for the Monarchs after winning the ball in the midfield and driving a shot to the upper right corner of the goal.
Kyle Beach,
Patrick Hamel and
Ian Huntoon all contributed to the shutout. Hamel made two saves while Huntoon added one.
Scott Horner also made a save off the line.
Walter Romano made three stops for Ferrum.
With the win, Methodist advances to the USA South Tournament semifinals against No. 2 N.C. Wesleyan. The Monarchs will look to avenge an earlier loss this season when they take on the Bishops Friday at 7:30 p.m. in Martinsville, Va. No. 5 Averett and No. 1 Christopher Newport will play in the first semifinal at 5 p.m.
