FAYETTEVILLE, N.C. - The Methodist baseball team opened the Diamond Invitational with a 12-0 win over Roanoke College.
The Monarchs took a commanding lead in the third inning with six runs. Roanoke struggled defensively with three errors in the inning and Methodist capitalized with timely hits and smart base running. The rally continued in the fifth with a lead-off single from
Matt Quick. Quick stole second and third before scoring on
Sergio Davis' single to left.
Tripp Lancaster drew the walk and both players picked up stolen bases for Davis to score on
Shawn Lovette's sacrifice fly.
Methodist rattled off four additional runs in the sixth on three hits.
Brian Inghram and
Dustin Hunt drew walks and
Corey Sykes reached on a fielder's choice.
Dustin Brown singled to score Inghram before Cameron Peed hit a huge triple to the fence in right to score Brown and Sykes. Lancaster followed up with a triple of his own to score Peed and secure the 12-0 win in seven innings.
Davis and Lancaster finished 2-for-3 at the plate and Brown hit 2-for-4 with two RBI. The Monarchs finished with 13 stolen bases as a team.
Andrew Womble pitched six scoreless innings with eight strikeouts for the win.
Louie DeCarolis finished in relief picking up two strikeouts in the seventh inning.
The Monarchs will be back in action on Saturday when they take on Huntingdon College at 1 p.m.
