FAYETTEVILLE, N.C. - The Methodist baseball team jumped out to an early 5-0 lead and held on for the 7-4 win over Hampden-Sydney College Wednesday afternoon.

Trey Such led off the second inning with a double and Brian Inghram had a bunt single before Brandon Thigpen hit a three-run shot over the fence in right field to give Methodist the 3-0 lead. The Monarchs kept the rally going in the third inning when Sergio Davis, Tripp Lancaster and Shawn Lovette led off with three straight hits. Davis and Lancaster went on to score for the 5-0 lead.

The Tigers tallied a run in the fifth, sixth, seventh and eighth innings, but the Monarchs capitalized on Brian Inghram's walk and two stolen bases to add an insurance run in the eighth and finish with the win.

Inghram finished 2-for-3 on the day with three runs scored to lead the Monarchs at the plate.

Methodist's Andrew Womble pitched four scoreless innings to earn the win with Rett Lee, Jaron Cayton, Josh Ayers, Tre' Britt and Rusty White pitching in as a staff.

The Monarchs will be back in action on Saturday when they host LaGrange in the first of a two-game weekend series at 1 p.m.
