FAYETTEVILLE, N.C. - Fittingly enough, Methodist women's tennis head coach
Francie Barragan earned both her first and her 100th career wins against nearby Fayetteville State University.
Barragan picked up her first win at the helm of the Monarchs Feb. 12, 2006 and just over five years later earned an 8-1 victory over the Broncos.
Methodist swept doubles to start the match.
Rachel Purser and
Dana Powell won 8-0 at number one and
Adrinne Beaver and
Brittany Britt won 8-2 while Fayetteville State defaulted at number three.
In singles, Purser won 6-2, 6-2 at number one. Beaver took the 6-4, 6-4 loss at number two and
Hillary Petruska won 6-0, 6-0 at number three.
Jessica Broadwell won 6-1, 6-1 at number four and
Lindsie Bentham won 6-2, 6-2 at number five.
Brittany Britt earned the default win at number six.
The Monarchs helped Barragan to her 101st win over Guilford College in the afternoon match.
Kaitlin Flaherty and
Katherine Meindl won 8-1 at number one doubles while
Laura Baker and
Stacey Brooks won 8-3 at number two.
Lauryn Justice and Broadwell teamed up for the 8-3 win at number three.
Methodist finished the 9-0 shutout with six straight wins in singles. Flaherty won 6-0, 6-0 at number one and Meindl won 6-0, 6-0 at number two. Baker won 6-2, 6-0 at number three and Powell won 6-1, 6-1 at number four.
Kelli Shelton won 6-1, 6-0 at number five. Brooks finished with the 6-3, 6-2 win at number six.
It truly was a team effort with 13 players contributing in the two wins. The Monarchs will be back in action Mar. 7-10 at Hilton Head Island, S.C. for a series of matches during spring break.
