FAYETTEVILLE, N.C. - The Methodist baseball team took an early lead and held on for the 5-2 win over Guilford College.

The Monarchs scored two runs in the bottom of the first after a lead-off single from Sergio Davis. Tripp Lancaster was hit by a pitch and Shawn Lovette advanced both runners on a sacrifice bunt before Davis scored on Trey Such's sacrifice fly and Brian Inghram singled to score Lancaster.

In the third inning Lovette made it to second on an error and advanced to third on a flyout before stealing home for the 3-0 lead. Lovette came back and hit a two-RBI double to left center to score Davis and Lancaster and the five run advantage.

The Monarchs held the shutout going into the eighth, but the Quakers capitalized on double down the right field line to score two runs. Methodist's Rusty White secured the final out on a groundout to hold on for the 5-2 win.

Lancaster finished 3-for-3 at the plate while Inghram was 2-for-3 and Davis went 2-for-4. The Monarchs pitched by committee with nine pitchers spending time on the mound. White finished with three strikeouts in two innings of work.

Methodist will be back in action on Saturday when they host Lynchburg at 1 p.m. and Berry at 4 p.m.
