FAYETTEVILLE, N.C. - The Methodist baseball team used timely hits to earn the 4-0 conference victory over Averett University.
Both teams had runners in scoring position in the first three innings, but it was Methodist who capitalized first with two runs in the fourth inning.
Trey Such led off with a double to the fence in right center and
Brandon Thigpen followed up with a home run to right field for the 2-0 lead.
Sergio Davis kept things going in the fifth with a lead-off single and moved to second on
Shawn Lovette's sacrifice. Davis went onto score after a RBI single from Such. The Monarchs added an insurance run in the eighth after a single from
Dustin Hunt and
Corey Sykes entered to pinch run.
Tyler Younger sacrificed Sykes to second and Sykes moved to third on a groundout before scoring on a single by
Tripp Lancaster.
Averett had a hit in all but two innings, but Methodist held the Cougars scoreless to finish with the 4-0 shutout.
Davis finished 3-for-5 at the plate while Such went 2-for-2.
Tre' Britt picked up his fourth win of the season pitching eight innings scattering nine hits with five strikeouts.
Rusty White finished in relief.
Cody Moore took the loss for Averett in 6.2 innings with four strikeouts.
Methodist and Averett will be back at Armstrong-Shelley Field on Sunday at 2 p.m. for the second game of the weekend series.
