Methodist Baseball Falls to Averett

FAYETTEVILLE, N.C. - Averett scored first and used a five-run sixth inning to put away the Monarchs 9-5 on Sunday afternoon.

Averett took the 1-0 lead in the top of fourth after two hits. Trey Such tied the game in the bottom of the inning with a home run to left center. The Cougars regained the lead in the fifth with an unearned run and followed up with five runs in the sixth for the 7-1 lead. Methodist responded in the bottom of the inning after a lead-off single from Corey Sykes. Tyler Younger drew the walk and Dustin Brown singled and advanced to third on an error that scored both runners. Brown went onto score on a wild pitch to the cut the lead to three.

After a scoreless seventh, Averett added two runs in the top of the eighth for the 9-4 advantage. The Monarchs added a run in the bottom of the eighth after hits from Matt Quick and Sergio Davis, but the Cougars pitcher Tyler Muench recorded the final out to hold the lead. Methodist's Brett Bially retired the first three Averett batters in the top of the ninth to give the Monarchs one final chance.

Brian Inghram drew a lead-off walk and Trey Such singled through the right side, but Averett turned a double play and recorded the final out with a groundout to secure the win.

Such hit 2-for-4 while Davis finished 2-for-5.

Andrew Womble went 4.1 innings with five strikeouts to take the loss. Josh Ayers, Jaron Cayton, Rusty White and Brett Bially pitched in relief.

The Monarchs will be back in action on Tuesday when they host Virginia Wesleyan at 4 p.m.
