FAYETTEVILLE, N.C. - The Methodist baseball team took an early 5-1 lead and finished with the 5-3 victory over Arcadia University on Wednesday.
Arcadia struck first with a run in the second inning, but Methodist came back and evened the score after a lead-off double by
Brian Inghram. He moved to third on
Shawn Lovette's fly ball and scored on a single from
Matt Quick to tie the game at one.
The Monarchs capitalized on two early walks in the third and picked up RBI from Quick and
Tyler Younger to take the 3-1 lead.
Brandon Thigpen reached on a fielder's choice in the seventh and moved to third on a failed pickoff attempt before scoring on Inghram's sacrifice bunt. Methodist scored again in the eighth when
Matt Quick led off with a single and stole second before reaching third on an error. Quick scored on
Dustin Brown's grounder to third for the 5-1 advantage.
Arcadia put together two hits in the ninth to score two runs, but the Monarchs held on for the 5-3 win.
Quick finished 2-for-3 at the plate with two RBI. Inghram went 1-for-2 with a RBI.
Brett Bially pitched three innings giving up two hits with four strikeouts to earn the win.

Rett Lee and
Rusty White finished in relief.
The Monarchs will take the road this weekend to face Shenandoah University Saturday and Sunday.
