Methodist Softball Opens Conference Play With Sweep

ROCKY MOUNT, N.C. - The Methodist softball team opened USA South Athletic Conference action with two wins over N.C. Wesleyan College Wednesday afternoon. 

The Monarchs jumped out to the early 4-0 lead after two runs in both the second and third innings. Marcy McKee, Jody Eyler and Rachel Chapman had consecutive doubles to spark the second inning rally. Kimber Hall led off the third with a home run and Darci Martin followed up with a single before scoring on another double from Eyler.

The Bishops battled back for three runs in the fourth, but Methodist added an insurance run in the fifth with a RBI-double by Chapman to score Raevin Harvey for the 5-3 lead. N.C. Wesleyan had just one hit in the final three innings as the Monarchs held on for the win.

Eyler went 3-for-3 with two RBI while Rachel Chapman went 2-for-3 with two RBI. Candace Piner picked up the win in four innings pitched with two strikeouts.

N.C. Wesleyan scored first in game two, taking advantage of an error to take the 2-0 lead. Methodist battled back and scored a run in the fifth on a RBI single by Alex Winters. The Monarchs took the lead in the sixth inning with two runs. Katie Byrd led off with a triple and scored on Hall's sacrifice fly to tie the game. With two outs, McKee singled and Sarah Chapman pinch ran to score what would be the game-winning run on Eyler's double.

Eyler went 2-for-3 with a RBI and Jordan Adams was 2-for-4. Alex Bass pitched the complete game to earn the win scattering seven hits with six strikeouts.

Methodist will be back in action on Saturday when they host Christopher Newport at 2 p.m.
