WINCHESTER, Va. - The Methodist University baseball team fell just short in its upset bid Saturday afternoon, falling 5-3 at No. 2/6 Shenandoah University.

Methodist (16-8, 1-4 USA South) had junior All-America Trey Such up to the plate as the tying run in the top of the ninth, but fell just short against the Hornets (16-0, 7-0).

With Tripp Lancaster on first after beating out an infield single, Such grounded to third against SU closer Kyle Scallion to end the contest.

Such's groundout ended a contest in which MU fell behind 5-1 against Shenandoah starter Greg Van Sickler, but rallied with two runs on two hits in the eighth.

Such got that rally by leading off the Monarch eighth with a single to right - he eventually scored on Shawn Lovette's fielder's choice.

Pinch hitter Dustin Hunt then cut the deficit to two by plating Brandon Thigpen with another fielder's choice before Scallion entered the game and struck out Tyler Younger to end the threat.

Shenandoah had taken that 5-1 lead with two runs in the second, one in the third and two more in the fifth off of senior Tre Britt (4-2).

Britt allowed five runs on eight hits and three walks in 4 2/3 innings. He also struck out five.

Van Sickler (6-0) went 7.0 innings, allowing two runs (one earned) on 10 hits and one walk. He struck out nine.

Lancaster led MU with three hits in five at-bats with Such and Sergio Davis each getting two hits.

Box Score

The two teams complete the weekend series with a 1 p.m. game Sunday.
